What Clients Should Know About EMDR Therapy

1. EMDR is Designed to Heal Trauma

Originally developed to treat PTSD, EMDR helps the brain reprocess painful or disturbing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. It is very effective.

2. It’s Not “Talk Therapy”

Instead of retelling trauma over and over, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (like guided eye movements or tapping) to help the brain rewire how it stores the memory. Although you are not having to talk endlessly about the trauma, you do have to “look” at it repeatedly.

3. You Decide How Much to Share

Your therapist guides you through the process, but you decide how much to share. Some clients truly appreciate this aspect of this approach.

4. EMDR Can Treat More Than Trauma

It’s also effective for:

Anxiety

Panic attacks

Phobias

Grief and loss

Chronic stress

Low self-esteem

Negative core beliefs

5. It’s Backed By Science

EMDR is one of the most researched trauma therapies and is recommended by organizations like the World Health Organization and APA.

6. Healing Can Happen Faster Than You Think

Some clients feel relief in just a few sessions. Results vary, but EMDR often works more quickly than traditional therapy, though it is much more intense.

7. You Don’t Have To Go Through Healing Alone

EMDR helps your brain do what it’s naturally wired to do: heal — with the support of a skilled therapist by your side.

Please always consult with your therapist to see if they recommend this treatment approach for you in your recovery process. Always inquire as to their training and experiences with such, prior to engaging in this process, as it is intense and can be very triggering.
