Comparing Lifespan Integration and EMDR
At Vibrant Life Therapy, we believe healing from trauma should be compassionate, individualized, and grounded in the latest neuroscience. Two of the most effective trauma therapies we offer are Lifespan Integration (LI) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Both are powerful tools for processing painful memories, but they work in different ways.
If you’ve ever wondered how these therapies compare—or which might be a better fit for you—this post will help you understand the key differences.
What Is EMDR?
EMDR is a well-researched therapy that helps clients reprocess distressing memories using bilateral stimulation (often eye movements, tapping, or sounds). Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR helps the brain “re-file” traumatic experiences so they no longer trigger intense emotional responses.
What it looks like in session:
- You’ll be asked to recall the “worst” part of a specific traumatic event, the negative belief you have about yourself in that memory, and where you feel it in your body.
- Your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation.
- The goal is to reduce emotional charge while forming new, adaptive beliefs.
EMDR is especially helpful for:
- PTSD
- Single-incident trauma
- Phobias and anxiety
- Negative self-beliefs
What Is Lifespan Integration?
Lifespan Integration is a gentle, body-based therapy that helps the brain naturally integrate past experiences into a coherent timeline. Developed by Peggy Pace, LI supports healing by using a timeline of memory cues that help the nervous system realize that the trauma is in the past and that the client has survived and grown.
What it looks like in session:
- You’ll work with your therapist to identify a variety of positive, neutral and difficult/traumatic memories.
- Through repeated viewing of a memory timeline (spoken aloud by the therapist), your brain and body begin to rewire emotional responses.
- There is minimal verbal processing, as you watch the timeline of your life and end up in the present day.
- There are a wide variety of protocols that will assist you to integrate a variety of life experiences.
Lifespan Integration is especially helpful for:
- Developmental or attachment trauma
- Dissociation or identity fragmentation
- Chronic feelings of being “stuck”
- Healing at the nervous system level
- Single and multiple-event traumas
