ART and EMDR Comparisions

By Rachelle Hamill

ART and EMDR are similar therapeutic approaches that help individuals process and overcome traumatic memories. We compare them in this post.

EMDR and ART Comparisions

EMDR and ART are treatment methods that have been compared for years. Here is some helpful information, in case you are hoping to decide between the two approaches in your own treatment.

Both Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are therapeutic approaches that use eye movements to help individuals process and overcome traumatic memories. However, there are several key differences between the two:

1. Theoretical Foundations

EMDR: Developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model. This model suggests that traumatic memories are improperly processed and stored in the brain, leading to distress. EMDR aims to facilitate the proper processing and integration of these memories.

ART: Developed by Laney Rosenzweig in 2008, ART incorporates elements from various therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but focuses more on reprogramming the way distressing memories are stored in the brain using voluntary image replacement.

2. Structure and Process

EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase approach: history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation. The desensitization phase involves bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones) while the client focuses on the traumatic memory.

ART sessions are more flexible with less structured. They typically follow a three-step process: image replacement, where clients visualize the traumatic event and then change the ending to a positive one; visualization, where they repeatedly visualize the positive ending; and integration, where they reinforce the new, positive associations.

3. Focus on Visualization

In EMDR, clients focus on their distressing memories and the associated negative beliefs, emotions and where they feel it in their body during the bilateral stimulation. The aim is to process and reduce the emotional charge of the memory.

ART places a strong emphasis on visualizing the traumatic event and actively changing the ending to create a positive outcome. This visualization process is repeated until the distress associated with the memory is reduced.

4. Session Length and Duration

EMDR therapy often requires multiple sessions (typically 6-12 or more) to fully process traumatic memories and address related issues.

ART is designed to achieve quicker results, often within 1-5 sessions, due to its focused and intensive approach.

5. Techniques and Interventions

EMDR uses a specific set of standardized protocols and procedures that therapists follow during each phase of treatment.

ART incorporates a variety of interventions and techniques, allowing for more flexibility in addressing the client’s needs. It includes the voluntary replacement of distressing images with positive ones, and it may also involve other cognitive and somatic techniques.

Conclusion

Both EMDR and ART have been shown to be effective in treating trauma and other mental health issues, but the choice between them may depend on the therapist’s training, the client’s preferences, and the specific nature of the issues being addressed. Hopefully this EMDR and ART Comparisions post has helped you see some of the differences between the two methods.

Always discuss treatment options with your therapist. They will recommend a form of trauma and distress repair that they believe will be best fit for you.
