When a conversation keeps ending in the same argument—or in silence—it can be hard to know what to change. Emotionally Focused Therapy looks at the feelings and needs beneath those patterns, with the aim of creating more secure connections.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, is an approach to psychotherapy grounded in attachment theory. Attachment describes our need for dependable emotional connections. EFT explores how we experience those connections and how we respond when they feel uncertain or threatened.

The work involves noticing emotional patterns, understanding the needs underneath them, and practicing different ways of responding. Its focus includes your relationship with yourself as well as your relationships with others. ICEEFT’s overview explains the model and its foundations.

Looking beneath a repeated argument

Imagine that one partner asks for reassurance, then becomes more insistent when the other pulls away. The other partner feels overwhelmed and withdraws further. Both may want connection, yet their responses leave them feeling more distant.

In EFT for couples, a therapist helps partners slow down an interaction like this. The work may involve recognizing the pattern, exploring feelings that are difficult to express, and trying a more direct conversation about emotional needs. This is an illustrative example; your experience may be different.

Understanding a pattern does not remove responsibility for hurtful behavior. Your boundaries and safety matter throughout the work.

What can happen in an EFT session?

A therapist may ask you to describe a recent difficult moment and notice what you felt, what it meant to you, and how you responded. Together, you explore the emotions behind that response. In couples work, the therapist may guide a conversation in which partners express those feelings and listen to each other in a different way.

The aim is greater emotional understanding and a more secure connection. Discuss your goals, comfort with the approach, and concerns with your therapist. Therapy outcomes and the time needed vary.

Is EFT only for couples?

EFT includes distinct approaches for couples, individuals, and families. Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, or EFIT, focuses on a person’s emotional experiences and connections with themselves and others. Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, or EFFT, focuses on family relationships. A clinician’s training and the type of work they provide matter when choosing an approach.

Finding the right support in American Fork

If you are exploring EFT, contact Vibrant Life Therapy to ask about clinician training, the kind of therapy you are seeking, and whether the practice can meet your needs. Ask specifically about individual, couples, or family work rather than assuming every clinician provides each approach.

You can also explore our broader relationship therapy and attachment therapy pages. Rachelle Hamill and Jeri Nakagawa’s profiles describes their background and areas of work; contact the practice with questions about EFT-specific training and fit.

When safety needs to come first

If a partner uses threats, control, or abuse, the concern extends beyond a shared communication pattern. Couples counseling can create additional risks in an abusive relationship. Seek individual support and safety guidance before considering joint sessions. The National Domestic Violence Hotline explains why it does not recommend couples counseling in abusive relationships.
