Can My Therapist Diagnose Me?

When new clients begin therapy at Vibrant Life Therapy here in American Fork, Utah, a couple of common questions we hear are:

“Can you diagnose me?” and “Will I get a diagnosis?”.

These are valid and important questions. Diagnosing mental health concerns is a process that involves clinical training, careful listening, and—when needed—collaboration with other professionals.

How Therapists at Vibrant Life Therapy Diagnose

At Vibrant Life Therapy, our licensed therapists—including LCSWs and other qualified professionals—use clinical interviews, symptom tracking, and standardized screening tools to assess and diagnose a wide range of common mental health conditions. We use the DSM-5-TR—the industry standard manual—to guide our diagnostic decisions.

We’re equipped to identify and treat conditions such as:

  • Anxiety and panic disorders
  • Depression and mood disorders
  • PTSD and trauma-related concerns
  • Adjustment disorders
  • ADHD (in many cases, provisionally)
  • and more.

Often, a thoughtful conversation in therapy, paired with careful symptom observation, is enough to begin an effective treatment plan.

Why Some Diagnoses Require Psychological Testing

While many concerns can be accurately diagnosed in therapy, some situations call for a more comprehensive approach. More complex or severe mental health diagnoses—especially those that affect learning, memory, personality, or executive functioning—often need formal psychological testing for accuracy.

This type of testing is done by licensed psychologists (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) using evidence-based tools and in-depth evaluations.

You or someone you love might benefit from psychological testing if:

  • You’ve received multiple or conflicting diagnoses in the past
  • Symptoms are overlapping or hard to explain
  • You suspect autism, bipolar disorder, or a personality disorder
  • Medication decisions need more clarity
  • Schools, workplaces, or legal settings require formal documentation

In Utah, there are several qualified psychologists we can refer you to for this kind of testing—and we often collaborate directly with them to ensure your care stays connected and client-focused.
