Why Private Pay Might Not Be Best For You

There are many benefits to not using medical insurance for your mental health therapy treatment. On the flip side there are reasons why some clients may want to use medical insurance for their mental health therapy. We will run down some of the most common reasons why clients may want to use their insurance benefits.

1. Possible Financial Burden

For some clients, paying out of pocket is not very feasible. Private pay therapy may just be outside of their financial reach. It is most common that multiple sessions would be advisable or required in order to achieve symptom alleviation, so clients should consider the long-term financial investment that they’re treatment may necessitate.

2. They Only Want Short-term Therapy

Some clients do not need or want to have long-term therapy. Sometimes for shorter stints in therapy, utilizing medical insurance benefits may be ideal.

3. The Process of Using Out-of-Network Benefits

Many clients have out of network benefits, which would allow for them to choose from a wide variety of therapists, however some clients might be overwhelmed by the process required of them to submit their Super Bill to insurance in order to be reimbursed. Though the process can be easy at times, there are multiple steps involved and a wait for reimbursement.

4. Unused Benefits

Some clients simply do not want their therapy benefits to go to unused each year.

5. Value

Clients may not understand the various quality levels of care that they may access outside of insurance covered treatment, and may struggle to comprehend that they may be able to access higher quality care when they invest more financially.

6. Diagnosis

Sometimes it is in the best interest of the client to receive a mental health diagnosis. Sometimes clients can benefit medically and educationally if they receive a diagnoses of their mental health symptoms. A couple of reasons why clients may benefit from receiving a mental health diagnosis may be to receive accommodations at work, pursuing legal matters or disability claims.

At Vibrant Life Therapy in American Fork we recognize that clients need individualized care which sometimes includes receiving a diagnosis. Private Pay therapists are not required to diagnose, as that is an insurance requirement and not a therapy requirement. Private pay therapy is not easily accessible for every person who seeks therapy.
