My Take- Britney and Justin
Justin Timberlake and his wife Jessica Biel have been quoted that they “just want everyone to grow and evolve instead of continuing to bring up the past”. This is reportedly their response to Britney Spears claiming that she had an abortion while pregnant with Justin’s baby. I’m bringing this up to educate on one thing.
As a therapist, I know how important it is to spend time looking at life experiences, even those that are most painful and traumatic. Just one of the benefits of the “looking” is that as we bring up the past, we are able to begin to move forward.
We cannot fully move forward without bringing up the past because it is part of our life experience; part of our story. It is not mentally or emotionally healthy for humans to disregard or avoid their life experiences. Such avoidance often leads to greater suffering personally and relationally.
In therapy, we talk about life experiences- all kinds. We look and see what is integrated and what experiences have been exiled and why. We find ways to effectively integrate all parts of a person’s life experience, so that they may gain greater health and well-being. There are some very beneficial forms of trauma therapy that can help people to no longer get emotionally and physically triggered or drastically reduce such triggers. This leads clients to greater acceptance of even their most painful experiences, so that true evolution can occur.
Having had an abortion is one of Britney’s life experiences. It is part of her story. It is probably for the best that she tell her life story how she experienced it. I bet it is truly helping her to move forward and evolve.
